University of Scranton Confers Master's and Doctoral Degrees
The University of Scranton conferred nearly 600 master's and doctoral degrees at its graduate commencement ceremony on May 26 in the Byron Recreation Complex. Graduates recognized at the ceremony include those who completed their degree requirements in August and December of 2017, as well as January and May of 2018.

University of Scranton Undergraduate Commencement
The University of Scranton conferred more than 890 bachelor's and associate's degrees at its undergraduate commencement on May 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre. Very Reverend Timothy P. Kesicki, S.J., president of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States, read the remarks of the principal speaker Most Reverend George V. Murry, S.J., Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, who was unable to attend the ceremony in person because he is undergoing treatment for a form of acute leukemia. Both Father Kesicki and Bishop Murry, in absentia, received honorary degrees from the University. Honorary degrees were also presented to Sister Ann Walsh, I.H.M., former CEO and current assistant director of Friends of the Poor; William Whitaker, founding president of the Washington Jesuit Academy, Washington. D.C.; and Cecelia Lynett Haggerty, Times-Shamrock Communications and former University trustee.

Sigma Xi Hosts 43rd Annual Science Honors Banquet
The East Stroudsburg University Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, hosted its 43nd annual science honors banquet on April 27 at the Stroudsmoor Country Inn in Stroudsburg, Pa. At the banquet, Sigma Xi honored students from seven departments within the College of Arts and Sciences.

University of Scranton students inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national Jesuit honor society. Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society open to students and faculty in all disciplines of the University.

University of Scranton students inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honor society. To be considered for induction, students must rank in the upper seven percent of the junior class, upper 10 percent of the senior class or upper 20 percent of the graduating master's class. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1997.

Computing and Information Honor Society Induction
University of Scranton students inducted into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the only existing international honor society in the computing and information disciplines. Undergraduate requirements for induction into the honor society include junior academic standing, completion of 18 credits in computing sciences and a grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Graduate requirements for induction include completion of 15 credits in software engineering courses and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1985.

University of Scranton students inducted into Phi Sigma Tau, the international honor society for students of philosophy. Eligibility for nomination requires a major or minor in philosophy as well as excellence in philosophy works. Induction of nominated students is based on voting results of philosophy faculty and current chapter members. The University's chapter of the honor society was established in 1982.

Students Attend State System Student Leadership Summit
Accompanied by Kimberly S. Adams, Ph.D., professor of political science, 26 students from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania took part in The State System Student Leadership Summit on April 24, 2018. The student-focused Leadership Summit provided a unique space for State System student leaders to develop and refine leadership competencies through presentations, breakout sessions, and networking. Each participant had the opportunity to build relationships with a diverse panel of Pennsylvania leaders from Governor Wolf's office, Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, State System's Office of the Chancellor, and the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg.

Qualifications for induction into the honor society include a major or minor in psychology, rank in the top 35 percent in general scholarship, and superior scholarship in psychology. University of Scranton students inducted into Beta Beta Beta, the national honor society for biology. For induction into the honor society, students must have completed at least three biology courses, maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average in biology, and be in good academic standing at the University. The honor society encourages undergraduate biological research through presentations at conventions, publication in the journal BIOS, and research/travel grants. Cedar Crest College Carmen Twillie Ambar Sophomore Expedition
Cedar Crest College's Sophomore Expedition is a unique program that allows every sophomore who is in good academic and judicial standing to study abroad during spring break at no extra cost. This year's trip is to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from March 3 to March 11, 2018. Travel, lodging and meals are paid for by an anonymous alum. Minus the cost of a passport and visa, it won't cost students anything beyond their regular semester tuition, room and board, and fees.

Cedar Crest College 2017-18 Preterite Club Officers
Preterite, Cedar Crest College's Literary Club, is devoted to increasing the understanding and appreciation of literature through such events as discussions of literary works and the presentation of videos, films, readings and lectures by established writers. To encourage literary interest and creativity, Preterite sponsors activities during National Poetry Month, an annual writing contest open to all students, and is the publisher of "In Other Words" the College's literary magazine.
